Handwriting

Handwriting is the practice of letter and numeral formation.  Children will attend to proper formation when they are given opportunities to write and experience print.  Some children will show more success at a faster rate depending on the motor development of the individual child.  In First Grade, reversals are not an indication of learning difficulties.  Reversals are common, and usually disappear by third grade.

We will concentrate on the development and mastery of neat and legible D'Nealian (modern manuscript) printing.  After we practice a letter in school, you will see a homework practice sheet come home.  We look for and encourage appropriate pencil grip because it will make the proper formation of letters and numerals easier, and writing will be more comfortable.

We work very hard on using lower case and upper case letters correctly, as well as spacing them correctly on lines.  We will send home within the first couple weeks of school a sheet with the correct formation and line placement of the D'Nealian alphabet and numerals.
