As children experiment with writing, their spelling moves through many stages of development. A young child's spelling shows degrees of understanding with the following: alphabet, direction of print, letters/sounds, concept of word, spaces between words, order of letters, sequencing of sounds in a word, and punctuation. District wide we will be using the Words Their Way resource for word study, phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction. We will teach word patterns, vowel sounds, blends, digraphs, word endings and high frequency words as part of our literacy program. Children will be actively engaged in manipulating letters/sounds in words and learn to sort words by various features. These experiences will allow them to compare and contrast word features and discover consistencies. Active, thoughtful weekly practice will help students internalize word features and become automatic in using what they have learned. We encourage you to use magnetic/foam letters at home for reinforcement in developing spelling skills.
