Math

The Math program for Kindergarten through 5th Grade students in the School District of New Berlin is Everyday Math.  It is a spiraling program where the math concepts and skills children need are introduced then revisited and practiced throughout the school year.  Our team feels strongly in meeting each child’s individual needs.  We will be differentiating instruction based upon the specific needs of the students.  Pretesting all students before each unit will give us information to plan our instruction and make any necessary accommodations to meet the specific needs of our students.  This may involve short-term, flexible grouping of students and small group instruction.

Regular communication between home and school is an integral part of the Everyday Math (EM) program.  EM HomeLinks and Family Letters will be sent home in a packet as we begin each new unit in school.  These pages and activities are provided to give you an overview of the concepts, skills, and vocabulary being taught, as well as provide practice for your child.  Since you will be receiving the entire packet at the beginning of a unit, your child may find unfamiliar tasks on the pages if we have not yet covered that particular skill in class.  If you think it would be helpful, you may want to tell your child not to complete the entire packet the night s/he brings it home, or to skip a page or two, and wait until we've covered the lesson(s) in class so s/he has a better understanding of what to do.  The EM HomeLinks are intended to give you a means to offer support and practice for your child in Math as necessary.  These are for your use at home and will not be collected at school.  If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress in Math please do not hesitate to ask one of the 2nd Grade teachers.  Your child's Reflection Log would be a great place to write a note to your child's classroom teacher.

Another aspect of our Math program is for second graders to take a weekly, timed, math "facts" test.  Our purpose is to help the children develop fluency with the basic addition & subtraction facts (0+0 through 10+10 and up to 20-10).  Students should be able to give accurate (correct) answers automatically (quickly).  Weekly practice at home (i.e. flashcards, dominoes, a deck of cards, using computer games, etc.) is expected.

Thanks in advance for your continuous support in this important learning of MATH!
