Chess Club is the place to be on Wednesdays from 7:30-8:25AM. Chess Club offers instruction and tournament competition from September – June. We start the year with more than 100 Grade K5 - Grade 6 students. About a dozen well-organized parents help us on Wednesdays to efficiently manage a cafeteria full of chess players. The students learn chess rules, terminology, tactics, strategy, chess patterns, etiquette, and a number of tournament formats. We learn how to use algebraic notation to record our moves and how to use chess clocks. Special days include a Simultaneous Day, where the parents play against the students, and 2 Awards Days. Elmwood will host an inter-school tournament. The Elmwood Chess Club is an affiliate club of the US Chess Federation. Many of our players have national rankings. We compete for team and individual awards at inter-school chess tournaments in the metro Milwaukee area. We attend 2 State tournaments and 1 National tournament. Chess Club is led by wonderful Elmwood parents and Randy Bubolz, chess coach at several New Berlin schools.
