Program/Service Description:
School Psychologists in the School District of New Berlin collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments and strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students. School psychologists help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally. The basis for this work is equal access to education for all students including increasing achievement by assessing barriers to learning and determining the best instructional strategies to improve learning.
Role of Position:
Consultation
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to plan data driven strategies for students to facilitate academic and behavioral growth.
- Participate on Building Leadership Team (BLT) and assist in analyzing school-wide data.
- Participate on Problem Solving Team (PST) to address needs of individual students.
- Assist others to understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.
- Strengthen working relationships between teachers, parents, and service providers in the community.
- Coach staff in planning data-driven interventions for students to facilitate learning and social/emotional wellness.
Evaluation
- Evaluate eligibility for special services.
- Assess intellectual, academic, and social emotional functioning.
- Determine social-emotional/behavioral development and other areas that impact educational performance.
- Screen and assess English Language Learners.
Intervention
- Work directly with teachers, interventionists, and families to help resolve problems in adjustment and learning.
- Provide training in social skills and emotion management.
- Help families and schools manage crises such as death, illness, or community trauma.
- Participate in collaborative meetings to determine student needs (may include IEP, 504, Problem Solving Teams, PLC).
Prevention
- Collaborate in designing/implementing/maintaining proactive whole-school programs and interventions
- Promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community
- Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological and physical health
- Develop partnerships with parents and teachers to promote healthy school environments
Research and Planning
- Identify and implement programs and strategies to improve services for students.
- Use evidence-based research to develop and/or recommend effective interventions.
