The New Berlin BUILD Team is a student organization that focuses on the total dismantling and rebuilding of a Royal Enfield Classic 500 motorcycle into a racing motorcycle.
The program is run by several mentors from both the school district and outside industry workers with a vast knowledge of motorcycles and various working trades such as welding, machining and fabricating. The mentors teach the students how to perform the many tasks required to turn a street-legal motorcycle and into a flat track racing motorcycle. All steps of the process are performed by the students under close supervision by the mentors.
Students who enroll in this program can expect to learn how to weld, cut, shape and form metal. Students also learn how to operate machines such as a lathe and mill and drill press. Mentors also share their knowledge in painting, including powder coating and spraying.
Students also compete against 10 other schools in fundraising, social media platforms, a pit challenge and a dyno challenge - to see which bike creates the most horse power. Students meet once a week from January until mid-May; at the end of May, the team attends several racing venues to see how fast their motorcycle is on the race track.
The SDNB partners with the BUILD Moto Mentor Program to bring this opportunity to students. The team does all of the work onsite.

ABOUT THE BUILD PROGRAM
Founded by The Iron Horse Hotel in 2011, BUILD is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to pairing teams of high school students with bike-building mentors in a collective effort to learn valuable life and interpersonal skills while working on motorcycles.
During a BUILD season, from January to June, each participating team will be given a vintage motorcycle by BUILD to be worked on, along with mentors, in the team’s designated space with the end goal of racing the bike in one or more American Flat Track motorcycle races. The BUILD program provides the chassis, working motor, and core components of the bike for the team to complete building with a few items of customization including the look and design of the bike.
