The Southwest YMCA partners with the School District of New Berlin to provide Y BASE – Before & After School Engagement. We are delighted to be serving our community with before and after school programs that foster each child’s cognitive, social-emotional and physical development through opportunities and experiences which focus on achievement, relationships and belonging.
At the Y, we believe that second only to human relationships, a well-planned curriculum will help define a child’s experience in our program. Our innovative before and after school programs are centered on nine research-based core components to keep children active and engaged. Our core components include: tutoring and mentoring, arts education, leadership development, global awareness and inclusion, family engagement, 21st century skills, health and wellness, college and career exploration and service learning.
In addition to excellent curriculum, we will implement choice-based programming. While homework, physical activity and interest centers are all incorporated into the daily schedule, it will be up to the children to decide, as a group, the order in which to complete them. As a result of a schedule with moveable parts, students have ownership in and responsibility for their own learning, and this is what helps keep them motivated and engaged.
Qualified and trained staff are crucial to our program’s success and quality. Our staff orientation and training is safety driven, child-focused, curriculum centered and in compliance with the state of Wisconsin.
