The SDNB Career & Service Based Learning Program is part of an educational process that affords students the opportunity to be exposed to different careers and work environments through hands-on work experiences with local employers who have agreed to mentor students in the world of work.

Career and Service Based learning allows students to apply what they have learned in school and deepen their understanding within an area of interest in an effort to inform their secondary and post-secondary plans.  It also allows students to develop skills, habits, and attitudes conducive to job success and personal growth.

Many students volunteer through their extra-curricular activities. Many find employment.  We encourage all students to reflect on and record these experiences in their Academic and Career Plan.

Officially registering for a Career and Service Based Learning program in the School District of New Berlin provides the following benefits:

  • Employability instruction and support
  • Opportunity to work towards State certified college and career credentials
  • Additional mentorship from instructional staff and the counseling team
  • Targeted communication about opportunities that reflect student interest
  • Recognition on your high school transcript
  • Some opportunities provide work-release time

Transportation for career or voluntary experiences is not the responsibility of the School District of New Berlin and is to be arranged by the parent(s) / guardian(s). The District has no obligation to secure an opportunity on behalf of your child as doing so is part of employment and leadership development.  It is also up the student to maintain employment by observing company rules and other requirements as identified by the employer.

If you have questions about the Career and Service Based Learning Program, please talk to your counselor.

Job Shadows

Credit: None

Students in grades 9-12 may gain experience in a chosen career path by participating in a job shadow placement. Job shadows are an opportunity for students to investigate a career interest through planned on-the-job visitations. Students will tour job sites to gain a better understanding of the industries and careers that may be of interest to them. Students who are interested in a job shadow placement have various opportunities to participate: individually during the school day (with proper approval by building student services staff), in the summer, during vacation days, and on building scheduled Job Shadow events. Students must have good attendance, a good discipline record, and be able to provide their own transportation for individually planned job shadow
visits.

Required Components to successful completion of an SDNB Job Shadow placement:

  • Students are responsible for finding job shadow placements - please refer to the SDNB Student Job Board for possible placement opportunities
  • Completion of job shadow placement paperwork and follow-up documentation

For help planning your job shadow, please refer to this document.

Mentorship

CREDIT: .5 credits per semester
(This course is graded pass/fail)
GRADE LEVEL: 11, 12

An individual plan, developed by the student, mentor and school mentorship coordinator/School Counselor will structure and guide the experience. This experience will require 40 hours in a workplace setting outside of school over the space of two terms and requires a culminating activity to receive credit. Students must have good attendance, a good discipline record, and be able to provide their own transportation.

Required Components to successful completion of an SDNB Mentorship placement:
