Program Objectives
The Future Teachers Program provides students with a broad overview of the art and science of education to help students better understand the profession as something other than a consumer. It is designed for students interested in better understanding the opportunities in education to inform their Academic and Career Plans after high school.
Enrollment
This program is offered in partnership with UW-Waukesha. Students register through Infinite Campus. You will be enrolled in UWS EDU 201: Concepts, Issues, and Field Experience in Education. You will receive 3 credits through the UWS and .75 credits towards your high school graduation requirements. This course starts your UWS transcript. In addition, your high school transcript will show that you have successfully completed a college level course. In the event a section is not offered at your home school, transportation will be provided. Please contact your counselor for information.
Related Coursework
The purpose of this course is to provide you with an introduction to the teaching profession as well as an overview of the competencies and skills required to be a successful educator. Through this course you will become familiar with the environmental, sociocultural, and community factors that impact an individual’s educational experiences. In particular, this course will focus on the important aspects of the student-teacher-school-community interactions. Additionally, you will become familiar with the common vocabulary and theories that are relevant in a contemporary educational setting. This course will utilize the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Ten Standards for Teacher Development and Licensure as a scaffold to build necessary knowledge and skills.
Industry Certifications
This course does not include any industry specific certifications at this time.
Field Experience/Mentorship
This course will also provide the opportunity to gain practical knowledge by enabling the student to work side-by-side with a licensed professional teacher who will facilitate this experience through observation and direct engagement in a K-12 classroom setting. Students will be afforded the opportunity to rotate through different experiences that match their interests. A mock interview will be held with the SDNB Employee Services Department to gain an understanding of what it takes to secure a position in education.

Internship/Employment Opportunities
Following successful completion of the program, students will be connected to our Career and Service Learning program for additional internship opportunities. SDNB alumni who are involved in this program in high school and pursue a degree in K12 education will be provided the opportunity to interview for student-teaching, substitute and permanent positions within the School District of New Berlin.
Post-secondary Alignment
Students will be connected with post-secondary education providers who offer post-secondary programs that match their interests to inform their Academic and Career Plans. In addition, students who are involved in this program will be provided with personalized support to expedite attainment of their post-secondary degree so that they can start teaching earlier.
