Our community's most precious treasure is our children; our future depends on them. Literacy empowers all individuals and the ability to read is the foundation on which a 21st-century knowledge economy is built. The SDNB is committed to providing the highest quality education to all students who walk through our doors. We are committed to the use of evidence-aligned reading instruction in our classrooms comprehensively and systematically and operate with a sense of urgency to ensure that all students are prepared for college, career and life by walking of our of doors as skilled readers.
Though much of the scientific evidence base of effective reading has existed for decades, the term "science of reading" has gained lots of attention recently. The SDNB uses the Reading League's 2022 definition: "The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing."
Research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world and is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficult; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention and intervention for reading difficulties.
The Science of Reading comes from multiple researchers in multiple fields including: cognitive psychology, communications science, developmental psychology, education, special education, implementation science, linguistics, neuroscience and school psychology.
The Science of Reading is not:
- an ideology or philosophy;
- a fad, trend, new idea or pendulum swing;
- a political agenda;
- a one-size-fits-all approach;
- a program of instruction;
- a single, specific component of instruction, such as phonics.
